US President Trump is pursuing a rigorous immigration policy, and an expensive campaign is intended to spread this message abroad. In Mexico, a Trump administration commercial is causing resentment.
In Mexico, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum, the government has asked several broadcasters to withdraw a U.S. government commercial that it considers discriminatory. Sheinbaum read the letter, sent by her government to private TV stations, at her morning press conference on Monday.
According to the president, the prime-time commercial by US President Donald Trump's administration contains "a discriminatory message" that violates human dignity and could encourage "violence against people on the move." Sheinbaum further stated that she would submit a bill to the Mexican Congress prohibiting foreign governments from advertising on Mexican broadcasters.
The TV spot is part of a multi-million dollar, large-scale anti-immigration campaign that Trump's Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced in February for several countries. "If you're considering entering America illegally, don't even think about it," Noem warns in the spot, which airs in Mexico with Spanish subtitles. She goes on to say that if a migrant commits a crime, "we will hunt them down," because "criminals" are "not welcome" in the United States.
US President Trump is pursuing a rigorous migration policy with mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. He accuses Mexico of not doing enough to combat irregular immigration and drug trafficking. Recently, he has increased pressure on his neighbor, including by announcing tariff surcharges.
Following Trump's preliminary concession in the tariff dispute with her country, Mexican President Sheinbaum is continuing to pursue dialogue, but has not ruled out retaliatory tariffs. Among other things, she deployed thousands of troops to the US border in response to US pressure.
